A fusion of different worlds, Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship is a recent innovation in combat sports. It features the fighters engaging in action without gloves. BKFC was founded in 2018 by David Feldman. The promotion has its headquarters in Philadelphia, United States.
Though the promotion is new, the sport has roots dating back to the 18th century. Bare knuckle fights were popular in England, former champions were Jack Broughton, Elizabeth Wilkinson, James Burke, Ben Caunt and Jem Mace. Yet, the sport wasn't made professional until 2018, for obvious reasons. Players can get killed in bouts if they weren't cautious. A sad incident unveiled this year in BKFC 20, Justin Thorton, who shifted to bare-knuckle boxing from MMA was knocked out 18 seconds into the fight. Thorton didn't rise of the carpet, ever.
Yet technically speaking, boxing and MMA too have long-term and short-term effects on a fighter's body. Boxers like Muhammad Ali developed brain damage in later period of his life leading to death. As far as the players are willing to risk it, the sports will survive.
The style is boxing, players wrap a gauze or tape around their knuckles and punch each other. Two lines, 3 feet apart, are drawn at the centre of the ring. Following the tradition, fighters will start from this line known as "toe the line." Only punches are allowed, no kicks, elbows, knees or grappling. If the fighter who hit the canvas didn't rise within 10 seconds, the referee will stop the fight. The fights are carried out in five rounds, of two minutes each. The weight classes are similar to boxing.
